Tabitha makes her debut as the competing Mom

Fall Individuals Competition at the Western Idaho Fairgrounds

We completed our first ever Fall Individuals competition. It was very cold and very windy, but everyone kept smiling. Tabitha (Kiser) Anderson made her debut as the competing Mom! She still had a lot of brilliance to her riding though her vaulting skills have gone south. Oh well, she thoroughly enjoyed it, but was upended by 17 and 18 year olds.

Beginners’ Clinic at Curiosity Riding Academy
Clinician: Mark Washburn

Special thanks to Adelaide and everyone at Camp Curiosity for our very successful beginners clinic.

The riders were an enthusiastic group who already possessed well-developed riding abilities. Much time was spent on the foundation skills of games including standing and running vaults, use of light seat and strong leg and control with the knotted rein.

All the ponies were new to the games—just like the riders—and though most took to the equipment just fine, we spent time on how to get a pony to relax and not be scared. Games played included Poles, Joust, and 5-Flag with much emphasis given to hand-offs.

Fine weather and a fine day for all the participants:
Katie Calpino on Basil
Amy Lee on Mighty Mouse
Juliet Herbert on Java
Stephanie Shantz on Pogo
Krista Oswald on Tumble Weed
Becky Campbell on Willy
Jessica Domenico on Elijah
Jackie Kominsky on Kokimo
Andrea Gordon on Dakota
Leah Giles on Shane

Clinic/Team Competition at Mendenhall Farms
Clinician: Mark Washburn

Thanks to the Mendenhall family for use of their great facility! We had a fine day with a good group of riders ranging from beginner to advanced levels.

The clinic lasted nearly four hours. Games such as Speed Weavers, 5-Flag , Joust, Sword, and Bottle Shuttle where covered as well as drills on vaulting—both standing and running.

The first order of the day was basic riding skill. Mark employs a modified “jumper seat” which emphasizes a light seat, good hands, and a strong lower leg. There were also discussion on the importance of intensity, focus and confidence as importance elements of successful play not just in the games but in all endeavors one undertakes.

Congratulations to the participants for a job well done:

Jen Everheart
Bernadette Staino
Sonna Stolheimer
Leah Giles
Jen Naji

Kristin Markmann
Caitlin Mealing
Lauren Machion
Heather Hillas
